Pitching an Idea

Capturing the Theme

The game theme was initially proposed in a pitch document.

The rooms and the near-orthographic look were inspired by a legendary sim and one of my all-time-favorites – Theme Hospital.

Describing the Game Mechanics

The mechanics needed to be simple and easy to develop – we didn’t have much time.

We decided to do a twist on a side scroller with bonus round sections.

Character Design

(Un)Monsters Are Born

At the same time when the game title was being established, I was tasked with concepts for the actual monsters.

In Illustrator I turned the approved sketches into vector illustrations.

Room Design

All room designs in the game had elements of the Client’s hospital building turned into game assets by me.

Putting the Band Together

I illustrated all 5 characters in neutral poses. This allowed me to move into animation quicker.

Animation

They’re Alive!

I used AfterEffects with DUIK to create mesh deform animations for various states of the UnMonsters.

Those were then turned into sprite sheets / flip books and imported into Unity.

Marketing Campaign

Promotional Microsite

I knew HTML & CSS so it was natural for me to move on to code this microsite and use the assets I already created.

It became one of my favorite websites to work on – a quirky and colorful one, it reflected the characters’ personalities.

Print & Web Ads

This was one of the last elements of the campaign and I was very happy to see one more request for additional UnMonster illustrations.

The task came with a visit to a photoshoot set up specifically for this campaign.
